Jeremy Wohl

About the Society

Jeremy was our son and a brother, grandson, nephew and cousin; a fiancé, and loyal friend to so many.  His smile was sunny, his laugh infectious. Jeremy was a kind and gentle warm-hearted man who was adored and loved by all.

In elementary school, Jeremy was described as a bright and hardworking student by his teachers who were surprised when he began to struggle to meet the required curriculum. In seeking help for Jeremy through a private tutoring organization, the director working with Jeremy suggested that there could be a learning disability and recommended specialized testing.  The testing revealed that Jeremy had dyslexia; a learning disability where the brain processes written material differently making learning difficult.

The diagnosis enabled Jeremy to request the additional help he needed. An Individual Educational Program (IEP) mandated by the Ministry of Education became essential for Jeremy to succeed at school. The IEP formalizes a plan to help students with learning disabilities succeed. Jeremy’s IEP plan included accommodations for extra time for exams with a quiet space, a scribe and reader and copies of course notes and lectures.

With the support of the teachers and administrators, Jeremy successfully graduated from Notre Dame High School in 2007. After completing a post-secondary Trades Discovery Program at BCIT in 2011, Jeremy decided to pursue a career in carpentry.  He was able to successfully complete Year 1 and 2 at BCIT with the help of the learning resource centre accommodating his learning disability. Tragically when registered in September of 2016 at a different technical school for Year 3, his experience was drastically different.  Although he presented himself as a student with a designated learning disability, no help was forthcoming. Jeremy’s educational rights for the accommodations he deserved were disregarded despite his many attempts and his perseverance.

One week before his final exam, Jeremy passed away suddenly on December 3, 2016. Jeremy was 27 years old.

Our family has founded the Jeremy Wohl Education Society, a not-for-profit society, in Jeremy’s memory with the hope that no student gets left behind due to a learning disability.

Our Mission

In Memory of Our Son Jeremy

The Jeremy Wohl Education Society, BC Registry S0070967, was established in March of 2019, to support students with designated learning disabilities. The Society provides the support, resources and tools needed to further the education of those students through funding of scholarships, educational assessments and tutorial support.

A Positive Impact

Jeremy was dyslexic and the challenges he faced have made us aware that change is necessary to create a positive impact on students facing similar obstacles. Jeremy touched so many people in many different ways and we wish to honour him in establishing this society in his name.  With this in mind, and with continued support from the community we will create an everlasting legacy to Jeremy.
